Plumbing is actually a pretty fascinating system when you think about it. It’s responsible for bringing clean water into our homes and taking the dirty water away, all without us really having to lift a finger. Pretty snazzy, right? So here’s the gist of how it works: Fresh water comes into the house from the main water supply line, passing through a meter that tracks how much water you’re using (got to keep an eye on that water bill!). The main water line then splits off to feed all the sinks, toilets, showers, and appliances throughout the house. When you turn on a faucet, water is pushed through the pipes and out the tap thanks to the pressure in the system. Now, on the flip side, when that water goes down the drain, it enters the waste lines which use gravity to carry the dirty water and sewage out of the house and into the main sewer line or septic system. Along the way, vents in the system allow air in to keep things flowing smoothly and prevent a vacuum from forming. And there you have it – the magic of modern plumbing! It’s one of those things we totally take for granted but rely on every single day.
